Jehovah God made a promise to Avram that he would have many descendants and that they would have a land. And He made good on that promise but concerning the land, it was clearly understood that though it was given to Israel it was for them a possession, forever, but a possession only. God owned it.
…“Look all around you from where you are, to the north, the south, the east and the west. All the land you see I will give to you and your descendants, forever, and I will make your descendants as numerous as the specks of dust on the earth…” Genesis 13:14-16 CJB.
“The land is not to be sold in perpetuity, because the land belongs to Me – you are only foreigners and temporary residents with Me…” Leviticus 25:23 CJB.
The “…with Me…” in the verse above grabs my attention. Is He saying that He has a purpose and that purpose is that we reside with Him?
You say “we”. But I’m a Gentile. Yahweh was speaking about Hebrews.
“…if you belong to the Messiah, you are seed of Avraham and heirs…” Galatians 3:29 CJB.
We can get entangled in theological debate but bottom line is that we all belong to God, not ourselves, and anything we have is a possession for a time, for the purpose of each of us furthering, and being good stewards of, His kingdom. They are tools to be appreciated, cared for and used properly. But they, those things put into our possession, are not what we dedicate our lives to acquiring or expanding on…
“…loving Yahweh your God, paying attention to what He says and clinging to Him—for that is the purpose of your life!” Deuteronomy 30:20 CJB.
…this is what the “things” we are given possession of, are for.
And there is a price.
“From him who has been given much, much will be demanded…” Luke 12:48 CJB.
This doesn’t mean nothing is required if you don’t have much, that the blessing of increase is for our enjoyment and ease alone, instead there is more to do and these blessings will be a means to accomplishing them and it will be expected that we use them for that purpose.
I believe that it can be a dangerous thing to be blessed if we are not careful. I can foresee judgment going a little like this:
“Then Yeshua sat down opposite the Temple treasury and watched the crowd as they put money into the offering-boxes. Many rich people put in large sums, but a poor widow came and put in two small coins. He called His talmidim to him and said to them, ‘Yes! I tell you, this poor widow has put more in the offering-box than all the others making donations. For all of them, out of their wealth, have contributed money they can easily spare; but she, out of her poverty, has given everything she had to live on.’” Mark 12:41-44 CJB.
Think maybe His judgment will be along the lines of, the first will be last and the last will be first? I do and rightly so. Whose love, in return for Yahweh’s love, was greater? Who received then gave and didn’t hold back?
Whatever the skill or talent, great or small, however much in possessions or wealth we are blessed, it would be good to remember they are God’s provision to us. We neither created nor brought into being anything. And they are meant to be used for His glory, to draw all men to Him so that we can reside together with Him. That’s His plan.
Father, help us to understand that You are God and we are the created ones.
May we use what we have been given as possessions to be a witness and testimony of our love for You.
When You bless us Father, may it be our hearts desire to strive to share that with a caring and generosity commensurate to Yours.
May blessing Father, never seduce us to take our ease, enjoy comfort, turn inward and be satisfied with ourselves.
May we instead use Your blessings as tools, skillfully used, cared for, as a means for performing a never ending work of reaching out, drawing people to You, praising, worshiping, walking and abiding with You.
Thank You Father for Your many blessings.
In Yeshua’s name we pray,
May God’s love be in us all.
