There Is A Scripture 08-31-18

I was listening to some apologetics on line this week and watching some TV.

There are times when it seems multiple things going on around one seem to be pointing to a common theme or maybe awareness. Maybe it is God trying to teach or refresh our memories about something we need to be reminded about.

In one scene of a show an older doctor was quizzing his younger protégé about a body they were examining. In the course of the discussion the older spoke a line that went something like this:

“Our job is not to make judgments. Our job is to understand.”

In a forum that was dealing with different questions the issue of truth came up and one of the apologists said this:

“Truth not undergirded by love makes the truth obnoxious and the possessor of it repulsive.” (Ravi Zacharias)

Another gentleman with him (Dennis Prager) spoke of understanding correctly the third word:

“Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain…” specifically a Hebrew understanding of the word “take”.

In a world where we all say we want to know the truth you would think by now we would all be in agreement. But we are not and that suggests to me a couple things.

Either there isn’t really such a thing as absolute truth, unchanging, and that truth changes with situations and circumstances or though we say we want the truth, what we really want is to have a truth of our own making that is useful to promote and/or justify our own actions. We don’t want a truth that is independent of, but is instead dependent on/tailored to, our will.

Maybe a third. Maybe we would rather support a lie rather than admit we had it wrong.

Be that as it may truth is the most valuable thing we can seek. The scriptures tell us:

“Adonai, who can rest in Your tent?

Who can live on Your holy mountain?

Those who live a blameless life,

who behave uprightly,

who speak truth from their hearts…” Psalm 15:1-2 CJB

“Send out Your light and Your truth;

let them be my guide;

let them lead me to Your holy mountain,

to the places where You live.…” Psalm 43:3 CJB

“These are the things you are to do; speak the truth to each other; in your courts, administer justice that is true and conducive to peace; don’t plot harm against each other; and don’t love perjury; for all these things I hate, says Adonai.” Zechariah 8:16-17 CJB.

Lack of truth results in justice that is not true, discord, plotting harm and a love of lies.

Learning and being guided by God’s truth leads to upright living, living a blameless life and being on the right path to the places where He lives.

So truth is the prize, the right tool for the job. But how we pursue and share it counts.

When we enter into covenant with Yahweh through Yeshua we become His and “take” His name. We “carry” His name. We “lift” His name. We are not to “carry” the Name we have “taken” and “lift” to do what is contrary to His character, for vain purposes.

He created us and remains committed to us out of love.

“Adonai is merciful and compassionate,

Slow to anger and great in grace.

Adonai is good to all;

His compassion rests on all His creatures….” Psalm 145:8-9 CJB.

He would have us be the same in our dealings with one another.

As we determine to learn truth together, may we be patient good listeners working at understanding another’s take on a matter:

“For our knowledge is partial and our prophecy partial… For now we see obscurely in a mirror…Now I know partly… 1Corinthians 13:9,12 CJB

And could it be that an understanding, an interpretation different from our own doesn’t necessarily mean we are wrong or they are wrong but we each may be understanding truth, partially? God’s Word is multileveled, multifaceted. Shouldn’t that be our first thought and motivate us to dig deeper?

Foundational and unchanging truth is that Yahweh is One, eternal, supreme and good. His Son died and arose, redeemed and made a way, only one way, that works to bring all His lost sheep home. This is key. This is the Good News. God is God of all. He looks into and He judges, the heart. Does it strive to be like His?

If we “carry” His Name rightly and deal with each other in His character, lovingly, peacefully, respectfully, selflessly, then we radiate a truth that is not obnoxious, are a people that are not repulsive. Then others will “see…and glorify…” Him.

Father, may we be a people that seek and love You and Your ways.

May we do so in harmony with one another, aiding and being aided by each other as we go.

May our joy be in learning and applying Your truths for life.

May we be humble and pride-less in that pursuit.

May our pursuit be couched in love for one another.

May You be glorified.

In Yeshua’s name we pray,

Amen.

May God’s love be in us all.
