There Is A Scripture 03-09-2018

The neighbor next door has a pole in their yard that goes up about thirty feet or so and at the top is a flat platform. Every year about this time there are a pair of Ospreys that build a nest on that platform. It doesn’t look that big from my vantage point but it is probably about four to four and a half feet in diameter and sides maybe a foot high. Once built, all you see is the head of the one sitting, above the wall of the nest, sometimes not even that if she is hunkered down, good protection from wind.

This nest has to be rebuilt every year because once the young leave, so do the adults and time and wind blow it apart. But watching as they build it is really neat. I’ve seen these big birds swoop down and grab branches off the ground and fly off with them and at other times seen them approach a dead branch high in a tree, rotate their bodies like a backward somersault, thrusting their talons out in front of themselves and grab it, snap it off in mid flight, never landing or pausing, flying off, sometimes with Spanish moss attached, trailing behind like the tail on a kite.

It’s a busy life for them with the preparation for young and especially so when the young arrive. During the season it is nonstop guarding and hunting and maintaining. The amount of strength and energy needed to raise those young and bring them to adulthood and flight over the ten week or so, time frame is… well… a lot. You wonder how they can do it.

But they do make it. And it is because they are living according to the purposes of their Creator. He made them a certain way to be able to live a certain way, provided resources for them that they might accomplish what His plan was for them to do. And they succeed because they are in harmony with and never outside, His design or purpose.

One of the hardest things a young person has to do growing up is decide what they want to do, what kind of life to build for themselves, a friend once put it.

Whether we are an unbeliever or a believer the hardest obstacle to overcome in our thinking is that purposes have already been planned for us. We are taught we can do anything we want, it’s our decision, no one does that for us. Life is not like that. We want what we think we want and many an unhappiness is arrived at because we “mis-knew”. My wife calls it preconceived ideas about the way things should be, leading to disappointment about how they really are.

We don’t always live our lives nor do we teach our children to live their lives, with the mindset that Another has created us and we are His, not our own. He has done so for a purpose and has provided the resources for us to do it and that that is the approach, in opposition to the mindset that “I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul.” (Invictus by William Ernest Henley).

It’s a big step aside, yes and down, to think of ourselves in, or to give ourselves into, the mastery and control of Another.

The osprey has it “easier”. He lives according to the laws and rulings that have been established for him. He makes no choices.

We on the other hand can make a choice.

Laws and rulings have been written for us as well, available to us in the Word and through the Spirit.

Our stumbling block is the mistaken, preconceived notion that trusting, submitting, obeying and servitude lower us when in actuality our willingness to do so actually elevates and positions us to be in that place and person He created us to be.

“...I am awesomely made, wonderfully…” Psalm 139:14 CJB.

“For I know what plans I have in mind for you, says Adonai, plans for well-being, not for bad things; so that you can have hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 CJB.

“I no longer call you slaves… but I have called you friends…” John 15:15 CJB.

“All who are led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to bring you back again into fear; on the contrary, you received the Spirit, who makes us sons and by whose power we cry out, Abba (that is, “Dear Father”) Romans 8:14-15 CJB.

Not such a bad deal I’m thinking.

Determining, deciding, in our hearts and minds to live in harmony with God’s will and purpose for us is the prerequisite to knowing what He has planned, what and who we will be when we grow up. I believe if we do, He guides us there and we will find that that is where we are and feel most suited, there be in peace and fulfilled.

Thank You Abba, Dear Father.

May God’s love be in us all.
